The Holidays on a GLP-1: It's One Day, Not a Whole Season

holidays

It's one day. Not a whole season.

the short version
  • On the actual holiday, eat what you want. Enjoy it.
  • Don't let one night turn into "well, I already blew it" until January.
  • Map every event now and decide which ones get a full day off. Not all of them do.

Here's how the holidays used to go for me.

One party. I eat whatever I want. The next morning turns into "well, I already blew it." The candy's on the counter, the leftovers are in the fridge, and "I'll start fresh Monday" turns into "I'll start fresh after New Year's."

And somehow it's January.

That's not one day. That's a whole season, and it started with one party.

The holidays aren't hard because of one big meal

They're hard because the food is everywhere, for ten weeks straight. Halloween candy that's somehow still in the house. Treats at work. Thanksgiving. The cookie exchange. Christmas. The leftovers from all of it.

I teach, so add the treats my students bring me with the biggest smiles. And I have a sweet tooth. Not every day, but when it shows up, it shows up.

This year looks smaller for us. We're in an apartment while the new house gets finished, so Christmas is low key. But smaller doesn't mean easier. The food is still everywhere.

My whole philosophy, in one sentence

it's one day. don't make it a whole season.

On the actual holiday, I eat whatever I want. Thanksgiving, Christmas, the party I've been looking forward to all year. I'm not bringing a food scale, and I'm not sitting there with a sad little plate while everyone else has fun. That day is a day off from the plan, and that's okay.

What I'm not doing anymore is letting that one day bleed into the next morning, the next week, and the next six weeks.

Because the party isn't the problem. The morning after is. That's the moment you either go back to normal, or decide you already ruined it.

You don't need more willpower in December. You need a plan you made before December.

Start here: map your season

This is page 1 of my Holiday Game Plan, and I want you to have it even if you never grab the rest. It's the one thing that changed how I see the holidays.

Grab a piece of paper and write down every event you already know about between now and New Year's. Parties, school stuff, the work potluck, the cookie exchange, family dinners. Then next to each one, decide what kind of day it is:

full day off

Eat what you want, enjoy it, zero guilt.

in between

One treat you actually want. Normal everything else.

normal

It's just a Tuesday with a sweater on.

Now count how many "full days off" you circled. If it's more than a handful, that's the whole problem right there.

Not every party deserves a full day off. Pick your favorites. Mine are Thanksgiving and Christmas. The break room cookies are not making the list.

  • The 7-page printable. Map your season, plan the big days, and check in once a week until January.
  • My three non-negotiables, including the one I've let slide every single holiday season.
  • The morning after. Exactly what I do the day after a big day, so one night stays one night.
  • The candy and leftovers plan for my fellow sweet tooth girls.
  • What to say when someone pushes a plate at you, including the line for the person who comments on your body.
  • A note to January you, written now while you're motivated.

What I'd tell you

You're allowed to enjoy the holidays. Fully. The pie, the party food, the cookies your coworker made.

You're also allowed to want to come out of this season still feeling like yourself. Those two things aren't fighting each other. They just need a plan.

One day off doesn't need a three-day punishment. It needs one normal morning.

  • A week of meals from foods you already like
  • Tell it what you ate at the party. No judgment, it just plans tomorrow.
