the short version
  • A tight ring and a 2 pound jump is usually yesterday's salt, not fat.
  • My good weeks keep getting undone by one big day, not by a bad plan.
  • What helps me stay isn't more information. It's people who notice when I go quiet.

189.

That was the number on a Sunday morning in late October, and honestly, I knew it was coming before I stepped on. My wedding ring wouldn't come off without running my hand under water, which is my body's very polite way of telling me I'm holding on to a whole lot of salt.

The day before, we were out from morning until night. We ate whatever was around, and I genuinely can't remember drinking one full glass of water. So when the scale said two pounds up from the week before, I wasn't confused at all. I knew exactly where those two pounds came from, and it wasn't fat.

when your rings are tight, the scale is talking about yesterday. not about you.

The number isn't the story

A salty, busy, no-water day shows up on the scale for almost everyone. Puffy fingers, a little swelling, a number that jumps overnight. Give it a few normal days and it usually comes right back down. I wrote a whole post about how I read the scale now, and the short version is that one morning can't tell you much. If you want the long version, it's here: you're not stalled, you're standing too close to the scale.

So no, I'm not here to panic about 189. What I actually want to talk about is a pattern. I finally said it out loud that week, and I have a feeling some of you are going to see yourself in it.

The loop I keep getting stuck in

Here's how it goes for me.

I'm consistent. Consistent, consistent, consistent. The scale starts moving and I feel amazing about it. Then one day happens. A big day, a busy day, a day where I just stop paying attention. And that one day pulls the scale right back up to where it was.

So I get consistent again, and it comes back down. And then another "one day" shows up and does the exact same thing.

If you've ever felt like you're losing the same three pounds over and over and over, this might be why. It's not that nothing is working. It's that the good stretches keep getting interrupted before they have time to add up.

It isn't the plan

I want to be really honest about this part, because I think a lot of us blame the wrong thing.

My plan works. When I use Picky Girl HQ, my meals are already decided from foods I actually like, and it worked every single day I used it. It even talked me out of a drive-thru one night that same week. I'm watching other women lose weight with it too. The tool is not the part that's breaking down.

And if you're on a GLP-1, you know what to eat, you know what helps, you know why it matters... the plan probably isn't your problem either.

my problem isn't starting. my problem is staying.

I'm amazing at the first stretch

Give me a fresh start and I'm all in. New planner, new focus, new Monday. The first two weeks of anything? I'm so good at those.

Staying with it long term is the part I've never fully figured out. The boring weeks. The weeks with three busy nights in a row. The Saturdays where we're gone all day and dinner is whatever's closest. That's where I drift, and I'm done pretending that's a food problem or a plan problem when I know it's a me problem.

And I don't say that to be hard on myself. I say it because once I could actually name it, I could finally do something about it.

What actually helps me stay

It isn't more information. I have plenty of that. You probably do too. What helps me is way simpler:

noticed

People who notice when I go quiet, so a big day doesn't quietly turn into a big week.

weekly

A weigh-in every Sunday, whether the number is good or not. Showing up with a 189 counts.

out loud

A place to say "I had a big day" before it snowballs. Saying it takes most of its power away.

That's what Girl Code Daily really is for me. We weigh in every Sunday, we check in through the week, and in November the whole group is doing a challenge built around this exact problem: one check-in a day, every day, even on the big days and the bad ones. If you have HQ and the Hub, I'm showing everyone how to use them to make those check-ins even easier.

If you're reading this thinking, "that's me, I know exactly what to do and I still can't keep doing it," you're not broken. You might just be doing it alone.

And if you want to see what happened the very next week, after all of this, it's here: you don't need a perfect week to see the scale move.

What a "big day" actually looks like

For me, it's almost never some dramatic night of eating everything in sight. It's a Saturday where we leave the house in the morning and don't get home until dark. Breakfast is coffee in the car. Lunch is whatever's closest. Water is something I keep meaning to drink. Dinner happens late because everyone's starving.

Nothing about that day feels like "falling off." That's exactly why it's sneaky. I don't notice it while it's happening. I notice it the next morning, when my ring won't budge and the scale is up.

Your big day might look different. A work event. A kid's tournament. A holiday. A road trip. A day where you're so tired you stop deciding anything at all. The point isn't to avoid those days. They're part of having a life. The point is to recognize them, so they stay one day.

How I keep one day from becoming three

These aren't rules. They're the small things I'm practicing:

before

If I know a big day is coming, I decide one thing ahead of time. Usually it's water in the car and one real meal with protein in it.

the morning after

I eat my normal breakfast. No skipping meals to "make up for it." That's the move that used to turn one day into a whole spiral.

out loud

I say it in the chat: "Big day yesterday, back at it today." Once it's said, it's over.

None of that is fancy. But every time I actually do it, the scale settles back down in a few days and the week still counts.

The rest of this weigh-in

The full Sunday Weigh In lives inside Girl Code Daily. Here's what's in it:

  • My shot day plan, and how I handled a sodium morning without panicking about the number.
  • What "one day" actually looks like for me, and why it keeps undoing my good weeks.
  • The question I'm asking myself about staying with something long term, and I want your answer too.
  • Your weigh-in. Drop your number, or don't. Either way, the girls want to hear about your week.
