the short version
  • The comments are real, and they're everywhere. You're not too sensitive.
  • Here are the 10 you'll hear most, with a comeback for each one.
  • You never have to defend getting help. Sometimes a subject change is the best answer.

You're at a birthday dinner. You ordered what you actually wanted, ate about half, and asked for a box. And from across the table, someone you love says it just loud enough: "That's it? That's all you're eating?"

And just like that, dinner turns into a press conference.

Nobody warns you that starting a GLP-1 also means starting a side job explaining yourself. To your mom. To your coworker in the break room. To the cousin who has never asked about your blood pressure but suddenly has a lot of thoughts about your shot.

It's not just you. In a UK survey of more than 3,000 patients, about 8 in 10 of the people who got judged were told they were taking the easy way out. And a Georgetown study found women who lost weight on a GLP-1 got judged more harshly than women who lost the same amount another way.

I'm over 75 pounds down with more to go, so I've heard my share. I dug through surveys, comment sections, and forums for the comments women hear most, and wrote a comeback for each. Some are polite. Some are a little less polite. Use at your own risk.

1. "Isn't that the easy way out?"

The big one. The official welcome to GLP-1 life. What it really says is "you didn't earn this," like every year you spent trying before somehow doesn't count.

Say back: If it was easy, I would've done it twenty years ago.

2. "Have you tried eating less and moving more?"

Wow, no, never crossed my mind. Most of us did every version of that for years before we ever said yes to medication.

Say back: Since middle school. This is what finally helped it work.

3. "You'll gain it all back when you stop."

Nobody says this to someone on blood pressure medication. Whether you stay on it, taper, or stop is between you and your prescriber, not you and your aunt over the mashed potatoes.

Say back: I'll figure that out with my doctor. Not at Thanksgiving.

4. "That's it? That's all you're eating?"

The portion police show up at every holiday table. A to-go box isn't a cry for help. It's lunch tomorrow.

Say back: I'm full. Turns out that's what it feels like.

5. "Should you be eating that?"

Same people, one week later, about one slice of pizza. You can't win with this crowd. Eat too little and you're starving yourself. Eat too much and you're wasting the shot.

Say back: Yep. That's kind of the point. I get to live my life now.

6. "You look sick." (Or "you look tired.")

This one stings most because it's dressed up as concern. Your face is going to look different because your body is changing. If you actually feel off, call your prescriber. But looking different and being unwell aren't the same thing.

Say back: I feel better than I have in years. My face is just catching up.

7. "You're taking it from people who need it."

A provider prescribed you a medication for a medical condition. That's the whole story.

Say back: My provider decided I needed it, and I trust them more than the internet.

8. "You'll lose all your muscle and have loose skin."

The doom forecast, usually from someone who has never once asked about your protein. Muscle and skin are worth paying attention to, and a lot of us do. But getting warned about your future body by someone who never cared about your current one is a choice.

Say back: That's why I lift and eat my protein. Thanks for worrying about my biceps.

Speaking of protein, my two-ingredient morning shake is a big part of how I get it in on low hunger days. Here's how I make it. (Affiliate links on that page.)

9. "Are you on one of those shots?"

Usually whispered, in front of other people, right after "you look great." You don't owe anyone your medical history. Some of us share it loudly (hi) and some of us keep it close. Both are fine.

Say back: Why? Are you thinking about it?

You'd be amazed how often the answer is yes.

10. "I could never put a needle in my body."

Good thing nobody asked you to. Plenty of us were scared before we started too.

Say back: Totally fair. Good news, it's not your body.

Why these get under your skin

We were raised to believe weight loss is supposed to hurt. Beauty is pain. The 5am workouts, the cleaned-out pantry, eating food you don't like, being hungry all the time. Binge Sunday, brand new person Monday, repeat forever.

Then a GLP-1 quiets the hunger and the food noise, and you start making changes without suffering every minute. And that makes some people really uncomfortable.

The comments usually come from one of three places: people who've never struggled with their weight and truly don't get it, people who keep their bodies through intense discipline, and people who lost weight the hard way before this was an option. When you don't suffer the way they expect, that discomfort comes out sideways at the dinner table.

None of that makes your progress less real. And for the record, this isn't easy. There are stalls that last for weeks. Side effects. A brain that still plays games with you. A body and an identity that change faster than you can keep up. That's hard no matter how the weight comes off.

not every comment deserves an answer. some just deserve a subject change.

You never have to defend getting help. And you don't have to use a single comeback on this list. Sometimes the best answer is "thanks," a smile, and "anyway, how's your dog?"

Quick note: I'm not a doctor. This is my experience, not medical advice. Talk to your prescriber about anything related to your medication or health.
